Rethinking Leadership Development: Leveraging motivational science to equip leaders to succeed (Virtual Event)
Many leadership competency models still include expectations such as “drive for results” and “motivate people.” According to Susan Fowler, bestselling author of Why Motivating People Doesn’t Work… and What Does, we’ve come too far in our understanding of human nature to be captive to these types of outdated leader-centric perceptions of leadership.
A survey of HR-related books and websites guiding management strategy cited six leadership theories that most influence the leadership competencies HR professionals include in performance plans. The sad truth: these top-down theories harken from 1841 through 1972, many derived from Henri Fayol’s 14 command and control principles of management established in 1916 and popularized in the 1950s.
Susan proposes three new leadership competencies brought to light by current motivation and engagement science. In her provocative and experiential presentation, Susan challenges us to rethink what it means to be an effective leader.
